This might be random, but that picture makes me think of the way that they used to make charcoal.
They'd stack these massive piles of wood with a little space in the center and then they'd burn it ever so slowly (i'm not sure how) over a period of time. That's about as much as I know about it... the rest has to do with gases being released and matter being left behind or something.
But that's what your little picture reminded me of :)
